Still, everyone recognizes the bravado of this group of individuals and their strong presence throughout history is celebrated today.  One way some people acknowledge the heritage of Native Americans is to dress up in Native American costume at various events and celebrations, even Halloween!  The secret trick to having a complete costume of any kind is by how you accessorize the clothing.  These tiny details might not seem to make a big difference, but in the big picture of your Native American costume can complete the look perfectly.

Jewelry is of course the first thing we think about when we think about accessories for costume.  This can include a costume pendant, beaded choker necklace, cloth or beaded armbands, and/or bracelets.  You can typically find these at any accessories store.  You can also use a fringed piece of cloth or a plain brown sash to belt your outfit.  Tie this loosely around your waist and leave the longer piece hanging down almost to the knees.

Beads and fringe were also used in many ceremonial dresses.  Historically, these were fashioned from unique stones, Indian costume moccasinwood, or bone, but today you can be lucky enough to find a variety of multicolored plastic beads in your nearest craft store.  Slip a few of these beads onto the fringe portions of your costume and tie to secure.  One single brightly colored feather can accentuate the headband tied around the head, for a female Native American costume.  Men sometimes wore feathers in their hair too, especially those with power and authority within the tribe.

Lastly, make sure your shoes fit the character.  Find some plain brown sandals or fringed boots to complete your look.  If it is appropriate to the situation, you can also choose to go barefoot.  No matter how you choose to dress in a Native American costume, always remember to be polite and respectful as you represent this marvelous culture.
