Small Details in Native American Outfits Make a Big Difference

As it nears Halloween night, perhaps you’re like many party goers and still searching for the perfect costume that will impress your friends.  Many people at this time of year try to be clever and creative to come up with a Halloween costume that no one else has ever thought of before. This is simply not necessary, when there are so many classic Halloween costumes that have been tried and true over the years.  Consider the traditional Native American outfits that you may have seen at Halloween parties or events in previous years.  Why reinvent the wheel when you can make this costume really stand out?

Anyone can wear a brown shirt and a brown pair of pants and claim that they are in Native American outfits, but it takes those small details to really have your costume stand out from the crowd.  One of those accessories that can help make it look like you spent a lot for your costume is a tribal-looking headband with geometric patterns in simple colors.  Even boys in the Native American culture wore this type of headband.

Another feature that is prominent on most Native American outfits is fringed details on the cloth.  In male clothing, this type of fabric embellishment is usually found on the chest at the waist and along the sleeves and pants legs.  Females also had fringed hems of skirts or long dresses.  Beads and feathers were also added to the outfits especially in ceremonial clothing.  To really add some authenticity especially in a warrior outfit, consider making a replica of a Native American breastplate piece with plastic beads to help create your look.  If your character is a warrior type, add a Tomahawk or knife to make him look even more mean and scary.  It is Halloween, after all.

Lastly, don’t forget the shoes as an important accessory to complete your look.  There are many different styles to complement your Halloween costume, including the option to go completely without shoes at all!  Most Halloween costumes come with a type of slipper called a moccasin or fur-lined boots.  You may have some of these types of shoes in your closet already but whatever you do, don’t wear your Nike sneakers.  Modern accessories will go directly against the look you’re trying to achieve.  Apply these accessory details from head to toe and he will make sure that everyone at the party will remember your stylish costume this year.
